I remember on the first day of hypnotherapy training, our teacher pointed out that we are in a trance daily, actually multiple ones. If you ever get so immersed in a book, a movie, or a piece of music to the point that you aren’t aware of anything else and lose track of time, that’s a trance. Do you sometimes get in the car, and drive from A to B and don’t even realize it? That’s also hypnotic trance. It’s just a question of your perception.
Despite my being a clinical and medical hypnotherapist for many years, my Mother was very proud, almost boastful of the fact that she couldn’t be hypnotized! I didn’t dissuade her, but in the last years of her life, I put her into trance every time I saw her to relieve her severe pain. And, yes, it worked and in this specific case, I didn’t tell her.
What Does a Hypnotic Trance Feel Like?
Each person experiences hypnotic trance in their own way. There is no right or wrong way to get there; trust me, you will find your way to the exact depth you need in the moment, as trances can range from very light to very deep. However, most people report feeling deeply relaxed, both physically and mentally and completely at ease during a hypnosis session as well as very aware, focused and attentive. You still remain aware of everything going on, and never lose control. While in a trance state the hypnotherapist will give positive suggestions to help make adjustments in the subconscious mind…for life changes will not happen until the conscious mind and the subconscious have the same beliefs and are in alignment. When you are hypnotized, your subconscious mind is introduced to new and positive beliefs so these changes can happen effortlessly, organically and quickly. As I always say to my clients, it’s a way to access your inner guide to be more receptive to positive change in a timely manner.
Do you know what’s happening around you?
Depending on the depth of your trance, you may not always be aware of your surroundings, or of what is exactly being said—which is completely natural, but you cannot be made to do or say anything against your will ever. So many people have a fear of hypnotherapists making them quack like a duck! I have lost count of how many times I have been asked that! My answer has always been: “Only if you want to!” That is stage hypnosis and is for entertainment purposes. Hypnotherapy is used to effect positive changes in your life.
As a Hypno Coach, I provide hypnotherapy (a therapeutic technique) as a way to help clients deal with a wide range of issues, such as insomnia, anxiety, stress, surgery fears, fertility, prepping for a huge presentation, improving mindset, chronic pain and so on. You will be able to adjust positions if you need to, talk and interact with the hypnotherapist and make your own decisions and choices. You have all the power. Your subconscious mind will continue to hear and process everything while in a trance, whether your eyes are closed or even if you are in an open-eyed trance. Both are effective.
Even though the hypnotic experience is different for everybody, the majority of people agree that hypnosis is a very relaxed state of deep inner calm. Many people even deny ever being in hypnosis until they see the transformations happening before their eyes. Although the hypnotherapist talks to the client throughout the process, all the work is done by the client themselves; truly an empowering process for them. Sometimes while in a trance, the client will verbally interact with the hypnotherapist depending on what technique is being used.
When your system is reminded that it can heal…it will heal itself. The hypnotherapist is only a guide—all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. I just provide you with the tools and techniques to use in your healing journey for your body, mind and spirit.
